The Green Deal Skills Alliance LaunchIt is widely agreed by government and industry officials, that the Green Deal’s success depends greatly on the quality of it’s assessment and installation work force. It is this workforce that will drive the Green Deal forward and inspire people to get involved. The experience of these early adopters will also mould the public’s perception of the Green Deal and lay the foundations for future participation.

For this reason, great attention to detail has been paid to the initial training and development of accessors and installers.  The Green Deal Skills Alliance is part of the Employer Investment Fund and is made up of three Sector Skills Councils; Asset SkillsConstruction Skills and Summit Skills. Their aim is to create a standard “framework” which will set common standards across the Green Deal process, instilling trust in the public.

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker spoke at the official launch of the Green Deal Skills Alliance and expressed that the commitment and expertise of the Alliance has been invaluable in kick starting the Green Deal. The Green Deal Skills Alliance has also developed a series of free training events, which have been titled Green Deal Connections, designed to educate about what skills will be needed to get the Green Deal moving.

The Green Deal Connections events have not only raised awareness of what skills and training will be required by Green Deal installers and accessors, but have also attracted significant interest from existing energy efficiency assessors, installers and learning providers.

What is clear from what people outside of government are saying is that more education is needed at this point. People still do not understand exactly how they can get their business involved in the Green Deal. In addition to this, it is important that the government not only focus on educating companies about how to get involved, but also the public who will be paying for it. The Green Deal Alliance is educating and it’s good to see these free events popping up. Let’s hope we see more of this on a local basis.
